Our Love Fern

{Hart’s-Tongue Fern Asplenium scolopendrium}

When I discovered this fern lurking in some of the wilder areas of the garden, it reminded me of the film How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, where Andy gives her man a love fern in attempt at over-the-top love in order to drive him away.

As we are starting to cultivate this area of the garden, the fern above needed to be moved to a new home.  It is now enjoying its spot, which gives partial shade, and is referred to, by all the family, as the love fern.  Hart’s-Tongue is evergreen and it will keep this corner of our sitting area looking interesting all year round.

Ferns are particularly useful to add interest to hand-tied bouquets and vase arrangements of flowers.  Their beautifully shaped leaves and deep green colour set more brightly coloured blooms off and allow them to stand out and become more focal.  When this one becomes bigger, I may well be taking a few of its leaves to add something special to arrangements.
